Applying to the Post.

Open to young people aged 14 to 20 who live in or near McAllen. No prior experience is required, and no family connection to any profession is expected or needed. What follows is a real application process — an interview, and a two-week academy before you are a member.

How it works

1. Send the interest form
Takes two minutes. It tells us you want to be considered.
2. We contact a parent or guardian
Every conversation about a young person starts with their family.
3. Formal interview
We interview the applicant. If they are under 18, we interview parents or guardians as well. We want to understand what the young person is looking for, and we want families to understand what the program asks of them.
4. Selection
Not everyone who applies is selected. We take the young people we believe will commit and who will make the group stronger.
5. The Academy
A two-week academy, typically held in the summer. It is demanding, and it is where new Explorers learn the standard the Post holds. Depending on when you apply, there may be a wait until the next one.
6. Official registration
Youth registration is completed through Scouting America’s own process, which we walk families through.

Being honest about this

This is not a sign-up sheet. There is an interview, there is a selection decision, and there is a two-week academy before anyone is a member. Some applicants are not selected, and some decide it is not for them once they understand the commitment.

We tell you that up front because the standard is the point. A young person who earns a place here has earned something that means something — to them, on a scholarship application, and in front of the people who count on them.

For parents

Adult volunteers complete background screening and youth-protection training. No adult is ever alone with a young person, in person or online. Every activity is supervised by at least two registered adults, and communication with young people always includes a parent or guardian.
