The program we fund
Structure, responsibility, and something real to be part of.
Explorers are young people aged 14 to 20 who commit to a demanding program of leadership development, physical training, community service and public service career exploration. They run their own leadership structure, plan their own service projects, and compete against posts from across the state.
What Explorers do
Leadership
Explorers elect their own officers and hold rotating duty positions where they lead their peers, account for their team, and answer for how a shift went.
Physical training
Regular conditioning against a published standard. Progress is measured on performance, and Explorers track their own improvement over time.
Community service
Service projects across the Rio Grande Valley. Hours are verified and documented, and Explorers can obtain a formal record for scholarship and college applications.
Career exploration
Structured exposure to public service careers, including law enforcement, through supervised educational activities, presentations and mentorship from working professionals.
Applied instruction
Hands-on classroom and practical instruction in teamwork, communication, problem solving, decision making under pressure and professional conduct.
Competition
Explorers train for and compete in organised events against posts from other cities and states, and travel as a team to do it.
Youth-led, adult-guided
Explorers elect officers and hold duty positions with real responsibility. During an activity, a designated Explorer leads the group, accounts for who is present, and reports to the adult volunteers supervising. Adults set the standard, provide instruction, and are always responsible for safety — but the day-to-day leadership belongs to the young people.
That is the point of the program. A sixteen-year-old who has been accountable for fifteen of their peers on a Saturday morning learns something that cannot be taught in a classroom.
What this is not
Explorers are young people in an educational youth program. They hold no law enforcement authority of any kind. They do not make stops, make arrests, enforce any law, or act on behalf of any agency. All activities are supervised educational and career-development experiences.
Who can join
Young people aged 14 to 20 who live in or near McAllen. No prior experience is needed, and no family connection to any profession is required or expected. What is required is showing up, meeting the standard, and treating the people around you well.
